Level & Hours

This course covers all the grammar and vocabulary of one half of an “A1” class (thus making it an A1.1 course, technically speaking). You can learn more about A1 and the CEFR proficiency scale here.

Generally speaking, researchers estimate that it takes 200 hours of instruction and daily use of a language to reach A1. If you complete this course's assignments and do nothing else, you’ll have been learning Bambara/Jula for approximately 30 hours.

Long story short, this course covers all the linguistic content of A1.1 class, but it will be up to you to practice, take lessons, read/write on your own, etc., to really reach that level in terms of performance ability.

Supervision & Certificate

Motivate yourself and stay on track with the Supervised version of the course! As you work towards the Course certificate you'll get individualized feedback and grading (from me, Coleman) on all the quizzes and speaking assignments, as well as the course's final exam. Read all the details here.

Questions

When does the course start and finish? How long will it take me? The course starts now and never ends! It is an online course of approximately 30 hours of material that can be done at your own pace. So, if you are very diligent, you can finish it within a month by studying for at least one hour a day. That said, you’ll likely need more time and practice to internalize and master everything covered in the course.

Since most people do the course alongside their busy adult lives, I recommend shooting to complete the course in 3 months time, which means studying for about 3 hours a week. To help with this, I have created an optional 12-week schedule for which you can get weekly email reminders if you like too.

How long do I have access to the course? For as long you pay to have access for!

How is this course related to Basic Bambara on YouTube? The Basic Bambara videos series is included and expanded upon in this course. Each Grammar assignment is, in fact, a chapter of a virtual grammar manual of text, audio flashcards and interactive exercises that corresponds with a video lecture from Basic Bambara on YouTube, but often go beyond it in terms of concepts and information.

Why should I sign up for this course if I can just watch Basic Bambara for free on YouTube? The video lectures of Basic Bambara explain the grammar of the language, but they don’t offer much in terms of vocabulary, practice or assessment. This class is for those that want or need additional assistance with their learning.

I want to learn Jula/Dioula/Dyula; can this course help? Short answer: Yes! The course is labelled a "Beginner Bambara" course for convenience's sake, but all of the forms that are taught are used and/or understood by speakers of both Bambara and Jula!

Longer answer: Bambara (or Bamanan) and Jula (or Dioula [from the French spelling]) are the two closest of the major Manding varieties. In crude terms, Bambara is primarily spoken in Mali and “Dioula” in Burkina Faso and Côte d’Ivoire. Derived from the word for “trader”, Jula is generally said to be a lingua franca form of Manding with fewer native speakers than Bambara. This ignores the case of ethnic Jula in the region, but it does capture the reality that oftentimes in western Burkina and northern Côte d'Ivoire, Jula is learned alongside one's mother tongue to facilitate interethnic communication at the market place, etc. Anyone who has learned Bambara or Jula notices them as different forms of the same language almost instantly. During my Peace Corps service I learned and spoke Jula in Burkina Faso, but after 18 months of service, I traveled to Mali and instantly received compliments on my so-called Bambara. In this sense, Bambara and Jula can almost be understood as two labels for the same thing; think of how Spanish for instance is known as both español and castellano. At the same time, Bambara and Jula aren't the exact same, just like English in New York and London isn’t the same. What are the major differences in practical terms though? See this post for some more details.

Does the course include live lessons? If you sign up for the "Solo" or "Supervised" version of the course, no. But you can potentially sign up for lessons with me in addition to the course if you are looking for 1-on-1 support and practice! Get in touch if that's something that interests you.

If you sign up for the "Cohort" version, yes, there are live conversation classes.

Can I make a single payment that isn't recurring? Yes! You can sign-up and instantly cancel the renewal following these steps. Or shoot me an email!

Can I pay via PayPal? It involves a work-around of sorts, but shoot me an email and we can see what we can work out!
