"My name is..." in Maninka (aka "Malinké) as spoken in Guinea

I’m thrilled to share my latest video lesson in my series focused on Maninka (AKA “Malinké”) as spoken in Guinea.

It’s a dive into the basic, yet essential, skill of introducing oneself and asking others for their names, etc.

Here's a quick look at a small part of what is covered.

In Maninka, "What is your name?" is generally said "I tɔɔ di?"

  • "I" means 'you'

  • "tɔɔ" means 'name'

  • "di" means 'how'

To answer, you generally use the frame “N tɔɔ le ___”. The word le is a simple particle that is optionally used to put emphasis or stress on tɔɔ here.

Watch the video for a full breakdown of these sentences and other related expressions used for introductions in Maninka!
