Barry and a Phone That Speaks Dioula

It’s my pleasure the share the latest video from An ka taa!

It’s a profile about my friend Barry, an Ivoirian software developer based in Abidjan.

Barry and his team are developing ASR (automatic speech recognition) software tailored for West African languages, with a focus on Dioula, the predominant Manding variety in Côte d'Ivoire.

The profile delves into Barry's background and the nuances of their ASR project. Their overarching objective is to empower African language speakers, many of whom don't read or write in their first languages, to utilize smartphones for essential tasks like medical appointments and basic banking without relying on reading or writing in languages like French.

Can’t wait to hear what you think!

Special thanks to the patrons that made this video possible. And of course, thanks to Barry and his team for letting me speak with them and capture a tiny sliver of their work.
